Infiniti is an upscale auto manufacturer known for selling premium quality vehicles as the luxury division of parent company Nissan. Devised almost in step with Honda and Toyota’s luxury brands, Acura and Lexus, Infiniti aimed to differentiate itself from Nissan’s more conventional image by offering desirable upscale vehicles to American consumers. The brand rolled out its initial offerings, the Q45 and M30, for the 1990 model year to a lukewarm response commonly attributed to advertising gaffes which quickly put Infiniti behind Acura and Lexus. With marketing strategies tweaked, Infiniti continued to expand its lineup throughout the ‘90s with the G20 (1991), an entry-level nameplate, and QX4 (1997), a mid-size SUV based on the Nissan Pathfinder. As sales rose steadily into the new millennium, Infiniti found reinvigorating success with the new entry-level G35 sedan and coupe in 2002 followed by the FX35/45 which boasted crossover versatility. Today Infiniti continues to advance brand image and differentiate itself from established luxury makes, increasing global presence and earning luxury approval by offering a unique and competitive lineup.
With a relatively short period of existence Infiniti nameplates have evolved to the point where they can hold their own against BMW, Lexus, and Audi- something that may have seemed like a dream when the first Q45’s and M30’s were put on the market. Still growing into their brand image, Infiniti’s limited lineup has managed to carve a niche in the luxury market, and further expansion seems likely. Focused on customer experience and setting a tone of influence rather than copy, the Infiniti brand is headed in the right direction.
