Hyundai is a Korean auto manufacturer known recently for selling well-equipped vehicles at low cost. Twenty years after Chung Ju Yung found success in construction with Hyundai Civil Industries (presently Hyundai Construction) the Hyundai Motor Company was born. Partnering with Ford, Hyundai co-produced the Cortina, and, rebelling against Korea’s preference for auto importation, introduced the domestically manufactured Pony in 1974. It wasn’t until 1986 that Hyundai tapped into the American market with the Excel, whose sales exploded due to low cost. Two years later the Sonata was born through the use of Hyundai-driven technology. Product quality issues soon plagued the company, however, causing Hyundai to reinvest in better technology and subsequently a better overall image. The process worked and, after purchasing Kia from bankruptcy in 1998, public perception steadied due to improved quality and through formation one of the industry’s longest warranties. Today Hyundai’s rapidly expanding global lineup offers the sought after reliability alongside impressive features while maintaining economic value.
Hyundai has carved out status within the auto industry, offering vehicles owners want to be seen in rather than manufacturing average transportation devices driven out of necessity. Expansion into the luxury field with Equus showcases the brand’s versatility while the technologically proficient Veloster should raise the bar for future debuts. Hyundai’s recent success puts quality at center stage and the brand’s future endeavors should continue to impress in terms of overall value.
