Conceived as Honda Motor Company’s luxury division, Acura is known for being the original Japanese luxury brand in the US while expanding core Honda values of performance and dependability. Debuting the Legend sedan and compact Integra, both designed for a North American audience, the brand rose swiftly to prominence by featuring an upscale image backed by low cost value- an already recognized Honda trait. Using this formula, Acura was soon able to contend with established luxury and win over a sizable consumer base, spurring Nissan and Toyota to follow suit and create the Infiniti and Lexus brands, respectively. Acura responded with the debut of the NSX, and, after few misses in the ‘90s regained its niche with several redesigns, the TL among these. 2001 saw the brand expand its lineup with the MDX, pouncing on the burgeoning crossover market.
