Preparing To Buy A New Car

Car buying can be a difficult and time consuming process, so it pays to be prepared.

Here are a few of the challenges that lie ahead for you...

  • Understanding a myriad of taxes and fees
  • Comparing offers from different dealers which are not in the same format
  • Negotiating with experienced salespeople who use high pressure sales tactics
  • Facing "up sell" attempts for options and features you might not need
  • Confusing pricing which may or may not include rebates, delivery charges, financing terms, and a variety of other things.

It'd be nice if car buying was like buying most other products - seeing all available choices and how much they cost up front - but unfortunately that isn't the case.

If you have a dozen identical cars, they will most likely sell for a dozen different prices.

This "information asymmetry" between buyers and dealers results in higher profits for dealerships. Unfortunately, they earn the most from uninformed consumers.

So what is the best strategy?

To understand how to buy a new car, the key is realizing that new cars are a commodity.

Yes, the customer service at a dealership or how far away it is can matter - but the car itself will be the same across dealerships.

One of those dealerships will sell it for the lowest price - you just don't know which one - and they certainly aren't going to tell you their lowest price up front.

So one way to go about getting a good deal is to contact as many dealerships as you can and try to get the best offer from each.

  1. Contact all your closest dealers
  2. Ask each for their best price
  3. Mention the current lowest offer you've gotten elsewhere and ask if they can beat it
  4. Repeat from step one until all dealers either refuse to lower their price further or stop returning your calls

Some consumers actually create an excel spreadsheet during this process to keep track of everything.

A few things to watch out for...

  • Price is not everything
Sometimes the dealership with the lowest price is still not the best. Finding a dealer who will treat you fairly and be helpful during the process is certainly valuable. And finding a dealership that is near where you live has a benefit as well.

The last thing you want is to show up at the dealership who quoted you the lowest price only to find that they've "just sold it" and now want to pitch you on different vehicle.
  • Make sure you're comparing apples to apples
The offers you get over the phone or by email will come in a variety of formats. Some dealers will email you a PDF of a window sticker. Others will copy and paste a bunch of text out of whatever proprietary software they are using to draw up offers.

Do the offers you're comparing have the same trim, options, rebates, lease terms, delivery charges, and tax/title/license fees? It can be difficult to compare offers with so many different numbers to look at.
  • Dealers may not give out competitive pricing over the phone
Most dealers are trained not to give out their best prices over the phone, and will instead ask you to come in to the dealership. Dealers need to make a living too, and if they sense you are pitting them against other dealers, they may not want to participate.

Don't be surprised if you hear less than encouraging remarks over the phone such as "I don't want to play ping pong" or "come back to me when you have the lowest offer from elsewhere and we'll talk."

An Easier Way...

If the above sounds like a hassle, you aren't alone.

Part of the reason we created CarWoo! is that we went through the same experience and found it frustrating.

So we built a service that handles much of this for you, and solves a number of problems using technology. Here's how to buy a new car on CarWoo!...

  • We contact all local dealers on your behalf
  • We get their best offers and allow them to see offers you've already received from other dealers
  • We provide all offers in the same format to ensure they're compared fairly
  • We show you ratings and reviews from past customers who've worked with a dealer (this helps with the customer service portion and avoiding dealers who will bait and switch)

During the above process you are kept anonymous from dealers, so they can't spam your email address or call you at home. In fact, the entire process can be done from the comfort of your home computer.

When you're ready to buy, you can simply click "Accept" on the best offer and we give you a claim certificate to take in with you to the dealership. There you can do a final inspection of the vehicle and complete the purchase at the agreed price.

We think CarWoo! is the lowest hassle way to buy a new car today, and we get some excellent prices due to the number of dealers we have participating in each deal.
