Super Bowl Commercials: Hangover Edition

Auto News.

Three-fourths of a 6 foot sub, 1 ½ pizzas, countless bottles of booze/antacid concoctions, and a couple of million dollars later, how did the auto brands fare on Game Day?  Super Bowl commercials tend to mimic the game itself- some ads come up huge while others flop embarrassingly.  And there’s gotta be one MVP.  For those of you who were too ‘fatigued’ yesterday to remember the ups and downs of Super Bowl Sunday, here’s your Monday morning recap.

Super Bowl Commercial MVP

Chevy Silverado – Looks Like They Made It

You may have heard that this one caused a stir before it even aired.  Way to go Ford, you just gave Chevy even more publicity.  And in a first half that was fairly lackluster in terms of both the commercials and game, Chevy came out of the rubble looking the cleanest.  I just wonder how long a human can actually survive solely on slightly scorched Twinkies.

The Rob Gronkowski Award

Chevy Volt, And The Thieving Aliens

Volt’s so good that aliens want, no, need to steal its technology.  Whoa!  Like the Pat’s tight end, Chevy’s Volt ad limped out at the start of the game and tried to make a go, with mixed results.

The Sentimental Award

Chrysler, Starring Clint Eastwood’s Halftime Speech

I sure hope you saw this one last night, because the YouTube version is no longer available, thanks to a “copyright claim by NFL Properties LLC.” I guess the word “halftime” can be copyrighted??

It was a good speech, anyways, and thumbs up if you guessed the voice at the start of the ad.

Second Half Big Hit

FIAT 500 Abarth, And The Sexy Lady

Somebody told me that there was a car in this commercial, but I’m on 46 views and still haven’t found it.  FIAT woke people up by introducing model Catrinel Menghia (who is Romanian) as a human version of the 500 Abarth.  She, or the car I guess, proceeded to seduce some dude on the sidewalk.  A nice way to start the 2nd half with a bang, like Patrick Chung’s big hit on Hakeem Nicks.

The Consistency Award

Volkswagen, The Dog Strikes Back

AKA, dogs!  VW is building a reputation for throwing out solid Super Bowl material.  This time it started with the Bark Side (that AT-AT-Walker dog is awesome).  That carried into a Beetle ad where an overweight canine starts a weight loss regimen so that he can fit through the dog door to run alongside a 2012 Beetle?

The ad then shifts to the Star Wars bar scene where the this year’s submission are discussed.  Now try and get that music out of your head.

The Tom Brady Award

Chevy Sonic, Stunt Anthem

It came out of the gates with good intentions, but in the end just didn’t have enough to win out.  The Sonic shares an array of firsts, although this is Brady’s second Super Bowl loss.  To the same team.  Bonus knowledge:  The band OK Go actually used a Sonic to make their new music video.

The 4th Quarter Highlight

Kia Optima, And The Real Life Dream Car

We got a tease before, and Kia’s full effort doesn’t disappoint.  Like Mario Manningham’s ridiculous sideline catch, Kia got a lot of people to pay attention.  You just can’t lose with Victoria’s Secret models, Mötley Crüe, and huge sub sandwiches.  Moral of the commercial?  Buy an Optima to stop potential adultery.

Alright, I’m off to watch The Voice.
