Men’s Health Selects Focus Electric for the 2012 Electric Car Challenge

Summary: Ford Focus Electric in the Feed Yet Again; Going Cross Country!

The Focus keeps getting clobbered with promotions. On Tuesday it was the announcement of an online reality television series, and on Wednesday, the Focus Electric was tabbed to sow its oats in between New York and Los Angeles. In Men’s Health magazine’s 2012 Electric Car Challenge, the Focus Electric will embark on a cross-country adventure designed to maximize the potential of electric vehicles.

The roadie ends in L.A. on Earth Day (April 22nd), and will include romps and stops in Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Albuquerque and Flagstaff. There are between 40 and 55 “charging” stops scheduled, each taking between 2 and 4 hours to recharge the new Electrics. Since the trip will scour mostly secondary roads in those cities, private citizens with in-home 240-volt 40-amp outlets will be asked to offer their services in this remarkable maiden electric journey.

While the Focuses are charging in driveways and garages, celebrity participants like Men’s Health’s Girl Next Door Columnist Naomi Piercey will be there to keep people occupied. Rawr!

This is a real risk reward scenario, though. Range anxiety (the fear that electric vehicles won’t last from charging station to charging station) could heighten if the Focus Electric stalls out along the way. But if it makes it clear across the country without a blip…it could do wonders for Ford and the EV industry in general.
