Fun Minivan Facts for May 2011

Maybe it’s spring fever, or preparation for summer road trips, but many Americans welcomed an addition to their family in May in the form of a brand new minivan. In fact, according to data from the CarWoo! marketplace, minivan sales doubled in May, up from 3.64% in April to 7.35% of all new vehicle purchases.

The Odyssey led the pack, with 42% of units sold, followed by the Sienna, with 38%.

Also in May, minivans were selling at an average discount from MSRP of 5.9% compared with a national average of 4.43%. So you minivan buyers can also give yourselves a nice pat on the back for saving more dough than the average car buyer last month. (Use it for the college fund!)

We also found the minivan buyers are less likely to select additional options on their vehicles (in part, because these rides already come UBER equipped! We’re talking tv’s, sweet nav systems, and mounds of cup holders in the standard package.) But when buyers do have more of a choice, say, in color, most of you went for the more subtle options – the majority of minivan buyers choose silver, black or gray for their car’s exterior.

Through 2011, minivans represent just under 6% of the total vehicles sales in both the CarWoo! MarketPlace and nationally, but those of you who do go the family car route are typically older and more likely to be male than the average CarWoo! buyer.

Did you buy a minivan in May? What model did you go for – and WHY did you pick such a subtle color??
