Best Midlife Crisis Cars for Women

A couple weeks back, we wrote about the best midlife crisis cars for men. Now it’s the ladies’ turn. It may sound a little Thelma and Louise-ish, but hunting down midlife crisis cars for women is a crazy fun ride. That’s because when women hit midlife, they’re looking for a chance to get away – for a fun ride with lots of performance, and beaucoup glamor. No more minivan or grocery-getter, this is all about the sex appeal. Well, that and the ability to put pedal to metal and get the heck out of Dodge whenever you feel like it. Because midlife and the open road go together better than peanut butter and chocolate. Delicious!

bmw-1-seriesTop Pick in Midlife Crisis Cars for Women: BMW 135i Convertible

There’s a reason they call BMWs the Ultimate Driving Machine – it’s because driving a Beemer isn’t like driving anything else on the road. They have a personality all their own, a particular brand of flash and sass, hence the reason the BMW 135i Convertible (configure one now) wound up on my list of midlife crisis cars for women. The 135i manages to be both sporty and graceful, fun and sophisticated, all without that pesky top to get in the way of the wind blowing through your hair. It’s powerful, with a turbocharged 300 horsepower 6-cylinder engine, more than enough to get you out of a driveway and send you shooting on down the highway at head-cranking speeds. But a BMW is a luxury car, and you’ll never find the elegance or detail lacking – just turn to the amenities inside of the car. Sun reflective technology keeps seats cool in the sun, rich wood interiors, and Bluetooth connectivity are just some of the features that will keep a woman of the world content to drive comfortably to her next adventure.

First Runner-Up in Midlife Crisis Cars for Women: Nissan 370Z Coupe

Typically I don’t recommend trims for particular cars, but with the Nissan 370Z Coupe (configure one now), I’m going to go ahead and advise women of a certain age to test drive the Touring trim. As midlife crisis cars go, the Z gives all the amenities and performance you’d want, but without the pricey tags of some of the luxury car. This is the flashy choice for all women with the need for speed, not just the ladies with the cash flow. Primarily, the Z is a performance car, with a V6 engine and 332 horsepower. The reason I suggest the Touring trim is because you get performance with the addition of style – heated leather seats, a Bose audio system, and Bluetooth technology, to name a few. So you get performance and style, which is no less than a hard-working woman deserves during midlife.

Second Runner-Up in Midlife Crisis Cars for Women: Mazda MX-5 Miata

For some reason, the Miata seems to have held its place in midlife crisis cars for women for some time now. Maybe it’s the fact that the Mazda MX-5 Miata (configure one now) is a small convertible, adorable but without being overbearing or flashy. It’s cute, classy, and cheap, relatively speaking – a new one starts at around $23,200 – so it doesn’t ever feel out of the realm of possibility for anyone. A car to aspire to, not to covet, so to speak. Driving a Miata is also fun, with great sport handling and excellent pick up, so you really do get the sense that you’re zipping around corners with style and turning heads. And isn’t that the point, after all?
