Auto News – Study Claims That, Yes, Smoking Pot Increases Chances of Hitting Something (Other Than A Pipe)

Our northern neighbors have been exporters of cannabis for some time, with their more liberal and open ways, their extensive natural space, and lack of anything to do other than play hockey and smoke pot. (It’s a terrible cliché, but has some truth, like most clichés.) So It’s not surprising that a Canadian research team from Dalhousie University has conducted a study on marijuana’s potential to cause accidents.

Guess what? It does. 49,411 car accident reports were studied to evaluate how many of the drivers had traces of THC in their blood streams; the research team discovered getting high three hours before driving more than doubles your chances of getting into a collision.

It surprises me that people are still surprised when outcomes like this are reported; of course pot smoking has an effect on driving ability. People smoke the drug to get high, not to sharpen their driving acumen. Pot’s not Ritalin.

Whether it’s your tendency to pass out face first into a couch, say something really bizarre to a group of people, or eat your way through a cabinet of cookies, crackers and peanuts after you smoke weed, try and space out (pun!) your departure time to three hours after the joint hits your lips for the last time.

Or don’t smoke if you plan on driving. Probably your best bet.
