Auto News – Independent Research Determines the Corolla To Be All Time World Champion

According to independent research by MSNBC, the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car of all-time. 37.5 million of those 4-cylinder sedans have made their way around towns and cities, traveled on highways and frost-heaved avenues, and driven through little German villages and Pennsylvania suburbs since 1966.

Coming in second, according to MSNBC, was the Ford F-Series (35 million of those suckers sold). Next is the Volkswagen Golf (27.5 million little hatchbacks), then the Volkswagen Beetle (23.5 million since 1933?!?!?!?), and finally the Ford Escort (20 million).

What’s the strangest thing in this story? That the little Corolla tops the list? Maybe it’s that a pickup truck is second, implying that, wow, everyone really does need to haul crap around in (or maybe we just…have too much crap).

I think it’s the Beetle being around since 1933. Babe Ruth was still hitting homeruns, but he couldn’t fit in a 1933 Beetle. Check out the prototype:

If I saw the 1948 F-Series prototype, I’d want to start hauling more crap, too. Pretty cool:
