Chevrolet Volt No Longer A Fire Hazard, an Application for Speeders and a Goyte Song
All you Chevrolet Volt owners or would-be owners can now rest easy. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has closed its investigation into the Volt (ongoing since November 2011), concluding that the threat of combusting battery packs is no greater than traditional gasoline powered vehicles. Relieved? Good.
GM will, however, add an additional metal structure around the battery pack for free if Volt owners are still freaked out. This is all part of the “customer satisfaction campaign”, as GM has stated adamantly this is not a recall, since the repair work is voluntary.
If you’re into figuratively setting your engine on fire (also known as speeding), there are new smartphone applications that will help you sleep easier, too. New radar detectors from Cobra Electronics and Beltronics provide real-time updates of speed traps. You can’t just subscribe for the updates, unfortunately. The radar detectors still need to be purchased in order to connect yourself to the police-avoiding community. The all-in cost of detector and annual subscription is around $120, which is much less than the cost of a speeding ticket.

Also…check out this song by the Belgian-born Gotye (you may be the 50 millionth viewer!). Careful, though…the song is wildly addictive. (I think Gotye is the type to drive a Volt.)
