Always practice safe style
You’re in the mood for a European performance sedan but you also walk a different line than most. You like to live fast but always safe, and have an appreciation the finer things in life. Sound about right? Then the 2013 Volvo S60 may be your perfect match. Take a look at the T5 lineup here.
Volvo S60 T5 Trims and Feature Highlights
The S60 is an upscale midsize sport sedan. The T5 represents Volvo’s base selection and is given three trim options for 2013: Premier, Premier Plus, and Platinum. New features for the T5 include an all-wheel drive option and a bit more step off the line, thanks to a revised turbocharged 5-cylinder engine. Outside, S60’s sleek lines create a unique silhouette that counters well against German rivals, and the cabin features enough of comfort and quality to pass the upscale test. Standard features for Premier trims include seating for five, 17 inch alloy wheels, leather seating, heated outer mirrors, rain sensing windshield wipers, a power moonroof, Bluetooth, and HD Radio.
Moving up to the Premier Plus gets you keyless ignition, dual-xenon headlights, and front & rear park assist. The Platinum T5 adds premium sound and navigation along with a rearview camera. And it just wouldn’t be Volvo without an array of additional safety tech. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and even a road sign translator can be added to any trim. Heated front & rear seats and a backseat entertainment system are also available.
S60 T5 models start at $31,750. The T6 and T6 R-Design are also available, and feature 300 plus HP performance along with an adaptive suspension, and specialized aesthetics for R-Design models.

Volvo S60 T5 Performance
Volvo places a turbocharged 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engine inside the Belly of the T5. With it, you’ll be able to utilize 250 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque that’s controlled by a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode for hands on gear shifts. T5 trims come standard with front-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive ($2,000) can be added. Volvo’s Speed Sensitive Steering offers three different levels of control depending on driving circumstances.
Volvo S60 T5 Fuel Economy
EPA estimates give the 2013 S60 T5 21/30/24 (city/highway/combined) MPG with front-wheel drive; go all-wheel drive and lose 1 MPG in each category for 20/29/23.
Volvo S60 T5 Interior Highlights
Volvo has placed high quality materials throughout S60’s cabin, and learning to utilize dual-zone climate control, navigation, and an endless array of safety tech doesn’t take away from the thrill of controlling the turbocharged 5-cylinder. Work commutes or cross country trips, the S60 has the feel of a refined luxury sedan.
Up front, things are stretched out nicely for both driver and passenger, though squeezing into the backseats can be a hassle for the full-sized among us; S60 offers just 33 ½ inches of rear legroom. Trunk space is a bit better at 12 cubic feet, and the both folding rear row and front passenger seat offer additional stowing configurations.
Volvo S60 T5 Safety
Safety has long been a strongpoint for Volvo, and the 2013 S60 T5 is no exception. Every model comes equipped with antilock disc brakes and brake assist, stability & traction control, whiplash protection, full-length side curtain airbags, and City Safety- which offers low speed protection for situations like stop & go traffic by actively braking if the driver’s reaction is deemed too slow.
Safety options include adaptive cruise control, collision warning with pedestrian detection, and a lane departure warning system. Another unique add-on is Road Sign Information, which uses a camera to detect various signs (speed limit, etc.) and translates the info to the driver via an information module inside.
The 2013 S60 receives perfect crash scores (5/5 for frontal, side, and rollover durability) from the NHTSA.
Volvo S60 T5 Summary
The S60 T5 is a solid and safe alternative to the big German three thanks to its turbocharged performance, strong aesthetics, and flawless crash test scores. Call it the best mainstream midsize alternative.
