While the Ford F-150 is lauded for being a consistent bestseller, it’s not the only option in the full-sized pickup world.  In fact, there’s a large contingent that says the 2012 Ram 1500 is an all-around better pick, but we’ll leave that one up to you.  And while it’s a compliment to Ford that it can be the first reference in a review about another brand’s nameplate, respect should be given to Ram.

It’s here.  Take a look at what the 2012 Ram 1500 is all about.

Ram 1500 Styles and Features

Like any pickup worth its salt, the Ram 1500 is available in a number of styles.  The Regular Cab option seats 3 on a 40/20/40 bench seat, and can be had with a 6’4” or 8” bed.  Quad cabs feature a rear seat and room for 6, but are limited to the 6’4” bed.  The Crew cab Ram will extend rear seat room, but shrink the bed size to 5’7”.  Ram didn’t think that the standard ST, SLT, Sport, and Laramie trim levels would please everyone, so they added a dizzying array of specialty models, including Tradesman, Outdoorsman, Big Horn, and even Texas themed Lone Star editions.  The best way to sort through all 2012 Ram 1500 models is to head over to Carwoo- just be warned, the options are everywhere.

Overall, Ram 1500 gives drivers a compliant, and some would say almost car-like, ride that’s stacked with a rich interior style and useful storage features throughout.  But the Ram is certainly full-size certified, with available V8, all-wheel performance, and a worthy exterior stature that brings to mind dirt, sweat, and capability- the last of which really sums up what a full-size pickup should be.

Ram 1500 Performance

All Ram trims save for the R/T are available with either 2 or 4-wheel drive.  The base Ram engine takes the form of a 3.7 liter V6 capable of 210 horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque, and is paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.  The V6 by all accounts is underwhelming, though is standard on only the ST 4×2 Regular & Quad trims.  Even if you don’t need the extra horses, when you consider the fact that the V6’s fuel economy is on par the stronger options, it’s tough to pass up either pair of V8’s…

First up is the 4.7 liter producing 310 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque, standard on the ST Crew & 4×4, and SLT models.  The 4×4 ST and SLT can also be upgraded to the HEMI engine, as can some of the specialized trims.  Sport, R/T, and Laramie trims get a 5.7 liter HEMI that’ll get you 390 horsepower and 407 lb.-ft. of torque.  Both V8 engines share a 6-speed auto.

Tow capacity sits at 10,450 pounds when properly equipped, which is right on par with the Chevy Silverado 1500.

Ram 1500 Fuel Economy

V6 Rams achieve an estimated 14/20/16 (city/highway/combined) MPG, and, as mentioned is about what you’ll get with the bigger V8’s.  Specifically, 4×2 4.7 liter engines match with 14/20/16, and 14/19/20 with 4×4, and the HEMI’s get the same 14/20/16 with 4×2, with 13/19/15 for the 4×4’s.

Ram 1500 Interior Highlights

The interior is top notch, from layout to materials, and only gets better as the trim levels rise.  Seating ranges from 3 to 6 people, and whatever configuration and trim you go with, expect good comfort both front and back.  The available extra storage areas are both useful and abundant: Ram can be fitted with rear under-seat pockets, in floor storage bins- which are removable and drainable for wet stuff, including ice- and a cavernous two-tiered center console.  If that weren’t enough, the brilliant RamBox lockable compartments- installed above the rear fenders- haul toys, tools, and even up to 240 cans of your best beverage with the 6’4” bed.  So it’s safe to say that the tailgate would come to you.

Ram 1500 Safety

Ram 1500 standards include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, stability control featuring trailer sway control, and front and rear side curtain airbags.  Options for higher trims include a rearview camera and parking sensors.  Government crash ratings give different numbers depending on the cab style; Regular cabs receive 3/5 stars overall, while Quad cabs rated a bit stronger at 4/5 stars.  Ram Crew cabs haven’t been given a final rating, but expect the same numbers as Quads.

Ram 1500 Bottom Line

If you need a full-size pickup, flip a 3 sided coin; any of the big three will get the job done.  Ram owners will just enjoy a little more comfort and ease along the way.  Buy your Ram 1500 now.
