Mazda’s Mazda2 (wonder how they came up with that) makes going small relatively simple, which is also part of its problem- if you want to see it as one. Sometimes simplicity works wonders, but drivers tend to like a little variety in their vehicles, or, at the very least the ability to do more and this isn’t quite the case with the Mazda2. The consensus says that Mazda2 ranks right in the middle of a crowded class of compacts and subcompacts, which still makes it worth a look- especially when considering the price.
Here’s a little of what to expect with the subcompact 2012 Mazda2. You can also configure a Mazda2 of your own on CarWoo!
Mazda2 Trims and Features
Flipping a coin covers all of the 4-door Mazda2 trim choices- go with either the Sport, starting at just under $15,000 or the Touring, at just over $16,000. Mazda2 Sport keeps it particularly simple with bare necessities like power locks, windows & mirrors, A/C, 15” steel rims, a 6-way manual driver’s seat, and keyless entry.
Jump for the Touring and upgrade to 15” alloy wheels, rear spoiler, leather wrapped steering wheel, chrome exhaust, halogen fog lights, and a slight upgrade in sound to 6 speakers- Mazda2 Sport has 4. Audio is MP3 supported and gets steering mounted controls for Touring trims. It’s also worth noting that cruise control is only an option for Touring models.
Mazda2 Performance
A single engine choice awaits both Sport and Touring drivers; it’s 1.5 liters and 4-cylinders, generating 100 horsepower and 98 lb.-ft. of torque. If you are thinking this seems a little light, you’re right, though it’s light all around. Most drivers are quick to point out that Mazda2’s nimble body, at just 2300 pounds, makes for a responsive if mediocrely powered performance.
Buyers can choose between either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission; those who have experienced Mazda2 will be quick to point out the 5-speed manual is the way to go.
Mazda2 Fuel Economy
Unfortunately mazda2’s light frame doesn’t rocket it to the top of the fuel ratings, but it still manages an expected 29/35/32 (city/highway/combined) MPG with manual transmission and 28/34 with auto, up from 27/33 last year.
Mazda2 Interior
So we’ve established the fact that this car is small. Inside the 5-passenger cabin lies 87.1 cubic feet of space to divvy up. Front seats are adequately sized with 42.1 inches of legroom to stretch legs. Mazda wants you to believe the 60/40 split-fold rear seats can fit 3 but we all know this compact story- adults particularly will be better off as a pair; rear legroom also shrinks to 34.8 inches. The rear cargo area is deep but limited to 13.3 cubic feet with seat backs up and 27.8 down. Go with a Ford Fiesta or Honda Fit if a big cargo space is big for you.
Interior minimalism is apparent inside with plastic everywhere; also noticeably lacking is a center console- only open spaces for phones & drinks, so the glove compartment may become crammed.
Mazda 2 Safety
Mazda2 standards include anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, stability/traction control, and a standard airbag setup featuring front-side and side curtain bags. Government crash testing hasn’t been performed for the 2012 Mazda2, but the IIHS gives ratings of the highest ‘good’ for frontal collisions and roof strength, and ‘acceptable’ for side impacts.
Mazda2’s Bottom Line
With such a crowded class competing and bettering themselves due to popular demand, Mazda2’s greatest value may be just that- good value. There are subcompacts to be had with more room, better fuel economy, and nicer niceties- and finding all 3 in combination is not impossible. But if the price is right, it can trump everything else. There’s a lot to open up in the small car segment, but the 2012 Mazda2 might just be the affordable stocking stuffer you’re looking for. Come open up a new Mazda2 on CarWoo! today.
